Biography and Inspiration

Janet's fascination with colour, the human form and the drape and flow of fabric undoubtedly stems from her career as a freelance costume designer in the television industry. Her versatility in this field saw her designing for many genres of production including period and modern dramas, children's shows, soaps, police dramas, sketch shows, sitcoms and variety shows.

Primarily a colourist, Janet also enjoys monochrome. She often works on several images at the same time and loves pushing boundaries.

Her figure drawings are quirky, colourful and sometimes outrageous, a spin off from the life classes she attends and which she considers essential to figure drawing of any kind.

In recent years, she has taken up screen printing and enjoys the discipline this medium affords in contrast to her more random painting style. Her latest foray is into the world of etching.

She has exhibited in both group and open exhibitions and is currently secretary for the Hertford Art Society Open Exhibition.

An advocate of 'a sketch a day', she is not averse to sitting in cafes surreptitiously recording small episodes in the lives of unsuspecting coffee drinkers

Janet has written, illustrated and submitted several children’s books.

Brought up in the Cotswolds, she lived in Canada for four years and has travelled extensively. She now lives and works from her home in north London.

Janet considers herself fortunate to have access to London and its plethora of museums and art galleries. At present, she is inspired by Joan Eardley, The Scottish Colourists, Avigdor Arikha and Matisse. Tomorrow it maybe someone else.
